about

I had this tune knocking around for years. I couldn't quite nail it. Then in 2018 I went to Melbourne, built on the success of the goldrush of the 1850s. The song lyrics began to click and I had an image of miners prospecting for money, then being trapped with all their gold. A morality tale song.

lyrics

GOLDMINE

By Mark Newlove

Verse 1

Lured to the goldmine
They come in search of opportunity
Digging in the goldmine
Hope for a life of security

Bridge

Lured through the goldmine
Digging in the goldmine
Cracks in the hairline

Verse 2

Gold in the goldmine
They celebrate at their new prosperity
Trouble at the goldmine
Stories of tension and skullduggery

Bridge

Gold in the goldmine
Trouble in the goldmine
Drunk on the moonshine

Bridge 2

Stray bullets fly and the cracks spread along the rocks
Debris and dust falling down, the way out is blocked

Refrain

How did it come to this? (x4)
What have they done?

SOLO

Verse 3

Trapped in the goldmine
Ears to the walls, there’s no sign of anyone
Fear in the goldmine
It’s been four days, will their mothers ever see their sons?

Middle 8

The gold they found
Can’t buy a reprieve
The last of the moonshine
is shared around
Here in the confines
Deep underground

Verse 4

Lying in the goldmine
They were undone by the seven deadly sins
Waiting in the goldmine...

Refrain

How did it come to this? (x3)
What have they done?

Mark Newlove London, UK

“Mark Newlove writes his own songs, covering a bewildering mix of styles ranging from folk, pop, rock, sea shanties, psychedelia, country, and much more. His is a palette of tuneful landscapes peppered by Alan Bennett type lyrics. Observing the little details and then blowing them up into hummable works is his forte. But he’s also much more than this.” Mac McCoy ... more
